CarMax, Inc. operates as a specialty retailer of used cars and light trucks. The company purchases, reconditions, and sells used vehicles. CarMax also sells new vehicles under various franchise agreements. In addition, the company offers its customers various services, including the financing for its used and new car sales through its own finance operation, CarMax Auto Finance, and third-party lenders; the sale of extended service plans; and vehicle repair service. As of August 23, 2005, CarMax operated 62 used car superstores in 28 markets. As of the above date, CarMax also operated seven new car franchises, all of which were integrated or co-located with its used car superstores. CarMax was co-founded by Austin Ligon in 1993 and is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
