Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) is a medical technology company engaged principally in the manufacture and sale of a broad range of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment and diagnostic products used by healthcare institutions, life science researchers, clinical laboratories, industry and the general public. BD's operations consist of three worldwide business segments: BD Medical, BD Diagnostics and BD Biosciences. In July 2004, BD acquired Atto Bioscience, Inc. (Atto), a privately held company specializing in optical instrumentation, software and reagents for real-time analysis of interactions taking place in living cells. In September 2004, the Company decided to sell the Clontech unit of the BD Biosciences segment (Clontech).
